How to choose

Best by category

Each selection is produced by an explicit rule applied to current Grovcap data — not an endorsement. No single Nasdaq-100 ETF is best for every investor.

Decision helper

Work through these questions in order. They are informational, use structural facts, and nothing you choose is recorded.

Step 1

Do you already hold a broad global or US equity core?

Yes

A Nasdaq-100 ETF can act as a deliberate satellite tilt toward large Nasdaq-listed growth companies, sized to a weight you are comfortable with.

No

Consider building the core first: the Nasdaq-100 excludes financials and most of the market, so it is not a diversified starting point.

Step 2

Do you want dividends reinvested automatically?

Yes

Focus on accumulating share classes; the fund reinvests income internally and you avoid manual reinvestment costs.

No

Consider distributing share classes so income lands in your brokerage account, which some local tax treatments favour.

Step 3

Do you prefer physical replication?

Yes

Filter the table to physically replicated share classes, which hold index constituents directly.

No

Swap-based share classes remain open to you, subject to your own counterparty and collateral analysis.

Step 4

Will you invest a fixed amount regularly?

Yes

Savings-plan availability for the exact ISIN, order fees and spreads usually matter more than a very small TER difference.

No

Compare fund size, spread, exchange listing and execution conditions for the size of trade you intend to place.

Step 5

Do you need currency hedging?

Yes

Compare hedged Nasdaq-100 share classes and the additional ongoing cost they carry; use the Hedging filter above.

No

Remember that trading in EUR does not remove the underlying currency exposure of the index constituents.

Learn the basics

What is the Nasdaq-100 Index?

The largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange, weighted by a modified market-cap scheme.

Eligibility depends on Nasdaq listing, sector and liquidity rules rather than on covering the whole US market. A modified weighting scheme caps the influence of the very largest members at rebalance, but concentration remains high between reviews.

Because financials are excluded and the index is limited to one exchange, sector exposure is skewed toward technology, communication services and consumer businesses.

Nasdaq-100 vs S&P 500

One is a concentrated 100-stock growth index; the other is a broad US large-cap benchmark.

Both are US equity exposures, so holding them together increases overlap rather than diversification. The practical question is how much extra weight in a handful of very large technology companies you want on top of what your core already holds.

Why UCITS ETFs?

UCITS is the European fund framework setting diversification, custody and disclosure rules.

European retail investors generally cannot buy US-listed ETFs, so Nasdaq-100 exposure is accessed through UCITS funds, which carry the key information documents your broker must provide.

Domicile choice within the framework affects withholding tax on underlying dividends and how the fund is reported in your local tax return.

Accumulating vs distributing

Accumulating reinvests dividends inside the fund; distributing pays them to your account.

Mechanically, accumulating avoids the friction of reinvesting small payments. Which is preferable usually comes down to how fund income is taxed where you live and whether you want cash flow.

Related reading: Reinvest or get paid.

Physical vs synthetic replication

Physical funds hold the shares; swap-based funds contract for the index return.

Both approaches appear in the Nasdaq-100 market. Synthetic structures add counterparty exposure managed through collateral; physical funds avoid that at the cost of holding and trading the basket.

TER, tracking difference, spreads and execution

The ongoing charge is only one component of what you pay to hold and trade an ETF.

Total cost is the ongoing charge plus the spread you cross on each trade, your broker's commission, any currency conversion, and the fund's internal trading and withholding-tax drag. Tracking difference captures most of that in a single realised number.

Related reading: Lowest TER UCITS ETF rankings, lowest-TER ranking methodology.

Fund size and closure risk

Larger funds are less likely to be merged or wound up and usually trade more tightly.

Fund size is reported by providers at different frequencies and in different currencies, so Grovcap shows the provider value and its currency rather than converting or estimating it.

Trading currency vs underlying currency exposure

The currency a line is quoted in does not determine the currency risk you hold.

A euro-quoted Nasdaq-100 line still holds companies priced in the index currencies. Only an explicitly hedged share class changes that, and hedging carries an ongoing cost that is visible in the TER column.
