Both approaches appear in the MSCI World market, and several of the cheapest share classes in the table are swap-based. Synthetic structures add counterparty exposure managed through collateral; physical funds avoid that at the cost of holding and trading a large basket.

Whether MSCI World is sufficient on its own is a portfolio question: it is broad within developed markets, but excludes emerging markets and standard small caps.
